DIGITbrain is an EU innovation program - coordinated by PNO Consultants (Italy) - which has the vision to unleash manufacturers' innovation potential through Digital Twins.

Compared to the digital twin concept, which is increasingly used by manufacturing companies today, the DIGITbrain concept will go one step further by developing the 'Digital Product Brain' which will store data throughout the entire life cycle of a production line or a machine. The Digital Brain will constitute an evolution of the concept of the digital twin, expanding it to a smart entity, by empowering it with analysis and decision support capabilities, allowing the agile adaptation and evolution of industrial products.

By having access to on-demand data, models, algorithms, and resources for industrial products (i.e. mechatronic systems supporting the production of other products), the "Digital Product Brain" will enable their customisation and adaptation according to individual conditions. The availability of industrial-product capacity will facilitate the implementation of the concept of Manufacturing as a Service (MaaS), which will allow manufacturing SMEs to access advanced manufacturing facilities within their regions or to distribute their orders across different ones.

The ambition of the DIGITbrain project is centred around two areas that will enable innovative use cases. On the one hand, the project realises an ambitious technological vision by developing the Digital Brain concept and its enabling technologies. On the other hand, it assures that these technological advances are taken up by a critical mass in the manufacturing sector, especially by SMEs and mid-caps, resulting in the smart business model Manufacturing as a Service, facilitated by a network of interconnected Digital Innovation Hubs (DIHs). Thus, in its lifetime, the project will implement 21 highly innovative experiments (14 of them selected in two open calls), each bringing together a team of a manufacturing end-user, technology providers, research organisations, High Performance Computing providers or Digital Innovation Hubs, in order to implement an individual use case-based Digital Twin.
